Happy Women's Day Y'all.. and some sobering thoughts

First of all Happy Womens Day to all my dear readers!

I know that all of you extremely talented women are going to make their families proud of you.

Indian women in particular have come a long way from the ages of forced child marriage, sati and purdah and a lot of women today are educated and financially independent and self-sufficient.

However a sobering thought is that we all still have to go a long way on this journey.

Today morning itself I read a sickening report of a 9 year old raped, killed and dumped at Police quarters in Mumbai last night. Frankly it disgusted me to the core, & it also was a chilling reminder of how much more work still needs to be done.

Female infanticide is still rampant in parts of our country, eve-teasing is a daily nightmare for most women who use public transport, and it is despite all these roadblocks that we Indian women have marched ahead to achieve excellence in all spheres of life, be it business and entrepreneurship (Chanda Kochar of ICICI Bank, Shenaz Hussain), science (Kalpana Chawla - astronaut), literary (Arundhati Roy) and I can go on & on with such names.

So when ever it seems that you are getting short-changed just because you are woman, Fight - Back!

Because no one make you feel inferior without your permission.

Let me take this opportunity to introduce you to this wonderful group called "Fight-Back, engineering gender equality." I have been a member of this group for the last year or so and have seen them do a lot of amazing, educational, path-breaking work in order to improve the situation of women in India.

They have drafted a petition calling for a radical change in the Indian Rape Laws, which currently offers no justice or solace to the victims. This petition has been drafted by the esteemed Soli Sorabjee and has been signed by 1025 people till date. They need 475 more signatures to table this before the parliament.

On this woman's day please take out 5 minutes from your busy schedule and sign up your support for this initiative if you believe in it.

This will help make our country a safer and better place for your mothers, sisters, daughters and more importantly you.

To sign the petition, please go here.

Thank you for all your support and have a wonderful women's day
