Fish Pedicure can spread HIV & Hepatitis??

I read a rather disturbing article just a few minutes ago that claimed that Fish Pedicures can spread HIV & Hepatitis.

Though the risk is low for people with healthy immune systems, apparently those whose health is not upto mark may face greater risk.

I don't know if this is true, for all you know it may turn out to be some bogus news but I would suggest you keep hygiene in mind if you are opting for this until we figure out the real dope on this.

    fish pedicure is banned in US and I really think its unhygenic but I doubt that it actually spreads HIV coz HIV virus needs to get into the blood stream but no idea about hepatitis.

    HIV spreads when infected blood enters your blood stream. It's not impossible, but extremely unlikely-- the HIV carrier will need to have an open wound and so will the person who gets "infected". Hep B and C spread the same way. RE-using water is obviously not very hygienic though.

    @Speaking Chic: I think the reason why they say HIV is because the fish actually creates micro wounds when they "graze" on the dead skin on your feet - that wound is big enough to allow all kinds of bacteria, fungi & virus to enter, but not big enough for you to feel the pain of a wound.. Though I am not sure if HIV Virus will survive in water that long to infect anyone, Hepatitis might as will tons of nasties to give skin infection.

    PS: HIV spreads through all infected body fluids - saliva, semen etc not just blood. I remember that much from my MSc :P :D

    i have always thought of it as unhygenic..so kept awy.also being a doc makes me paranoid aout these things !!
