Make Up for Beginners

This is straight inspiration from one of my favourite shows - Tim Gunn's Guide to Style. You can catch this on AXN.
The Ten Essential Wardrobe Elements as devised by Tim Gunn are practical pieces around which you can build your wardrobe. Tim Gunn is the star of a reality makeover television show onAXN called Tim Gunn's Guide to Style. He became well known from the hit TV show Project Runway, where he counseled contestants on their stylish creations.
The Ten Elements are mostly classic pieces, but what's important is whether they fit you properly, are not outdated, and bring out your best features.
So I decided to come up with my own top 10 essential items in Make-Up list that I think are essential for all women or any ladies/girls who are new to makeup.

1.      Foundation: Ok, this is the only one area I can’t make a recommendation for. It first of all depends on whether you want sheer, medium or heavy coverage. And the brand in which you find your skin tone match. Some of us may have to go the MACs for the perfect one, for some, Lakme will suffice. This is a very individual product. Invest in a good foundation; a good skin will help all your other features shine. Also get something with SPF, you will save on slathering a sunscreen.

2.      Concealer: Concealer is different from foundation. Foundation is sheer, and its purpose is to even out the skin tone. Concealer is heavier and more opaque, and its purpose is to cover problem areas. It comes in liquids (good for dry skin), creams and sticks. Liquids are the lightest form of concealer, while sticks are the most solid and opaque. Concealer comes in a variety of shades, and you want to make sure you find one (or one palette) that matches your skin tone. The general guideline is one-half to one shade lighter than your skin. If you go too dark, your skin will look even more uneven; too light, and it'll draw attention to imperfections instead of hiding them.

Colorbar has a good concealer that retails for around Rs. 400/-

3.      Loose Powder: Applied correctly, it's invisible, but it creates a flawless, perfectly blended look. Translucent powder is just what it sounds like: a sheer, fine and effectively colorless substance. It's applied all over the face in a light layer, and it has a few different benefits: It creates a unified coating so borders between each makeup element (foundation, eyes, cheeks) are less obvious; it controls oil and shine; it "sets" foundation and concealer so they last longer and don't streak; and it can tone down mistakes (like too much color on the cheeks). It goes on after everything except mascara and lip color.

Try Lakme Rose powder. Rs. 80/- Read review here.

4.      Blush:  This item is a must to infuse color into your face. Used on your cheekbones & swept back into the hairline, it makes you glow.

Colorbar has a good range of colors that suit all skin tones. Retails for Rs. 250/-

5.      Eyeshadow Palette: Maybelline makes an excellent eyeshadow quad called Chai Latte. The colors are a light shimmery cream color – which makes an excellent highlighter, a matte taupe to go all over the lid, a very shimmery bronze/gold and a matte chocolate brown for the crease and external V.  The matte shades are also useful for defining the eyebrows.  Good for creating an everyday, extremely wearable smoky brown. Retails for Rs. 225/-

6.      Mascara: take your pick between maybelline’s Define-A-Lash (read review here. Rs. 290/-) and Collosial volumising Mascara (read review here. Rs. 260/-). Get it in waterproof. Both are excellent mascaras for daily wear.

7.      Eyeliner: Try Colorbar for Black and Truffle (a very chocolaty brown). Both are smudge proof. Price: Rs. 225 for truffle, 250 for the black one. Read review here.

8.      Gloss: Colorbar juicy lip gloss in a tube for Rs. 200/-. These are transparent shades with colored shimmer. They also make great substitutes for lip balm. Read review here.

9.      Lipstick: Get a flattering pink-brown to go with all looks. Try Lakme and Colorbar. Both have nice shades. They will cost you anything between 200 – 250.

10.  A good set of makeup brushes: If your budget is tight, you can get the combined set from Vega. It is quite cheap and good to practice with if you are a newbie. However the quality is not so good, if you have some monies to spend – consider buying the individual Vega brushes – for some reason they have better bristles, and if you have money left to splurge – then try The Body Shop, or MAC.

Ok, I know, I broke the rules and snuck in an extra one. But trust me you can’t do without this.
11.  Coconut oil / Mineral oil/ Baby Oil: Essential to remove makeup. I use simple Parachute.
I hope this list helps those of you who are new to the entire business.
If there is anything I missed out on or if you have any other product reccos, do share them!

Sadly, colorbar is not available in Bangalore (correct me if I'm wrong)

  11. Thanks for the makeup tips, Tanveer. Will definitely come in handy. I love the way your blog focuses on products that are available in India :)

@V: I think there is a Colorbar counter at the new Bangalore Central mall in Jayanagar 9th Block, next to Woody's. Not sure what they have coz I was rushing that day and didn't have time to check it out. Btw, they also have a Body Shop counter ;)
