Sesame Oil for Skin

Recently I ran out of my regular makeup remover, and was looking for something strong, yet gentle on the eye to remove my Bourjois Effet Lash Mascara. This mascara is enriched with Kohl and thus is a little difficult to get off. It messes up the entire area, it is very heavily pigmented.

I happened to come across a bottle of Sesame oil in my cabinet and I thought, why not. As it turns out, I was soon berating myself for not having used this earlier. It not only dissolved all my mascara in a jiffy, it also came off very easily with a damp cotton wool. I didn't experience any oiliness or greasiness once I had wiped it off and it also, surprisingly left my skin feeling very soft.

I began researching a bit on this oil and I found that this oil is known as the Queen of Oils due to this high content of Vit E - a natural antioxidant and maximum polyunsaturated fatty acids which give it healing properties.
  1. Sesame oil contains vitamin E in abundance along with vitamin B complex and vitamin A which helps nourish and rejuvenate skin. Other beneficial nutrients in sesame oil include phosphorus, copper, calcium, zinc and magnesium.
  2. The vitamin E in sesame oil makes it a very good and moisturizer, which, if used regularly, keeps your skin moisturized, healthy, hydrated and nourished.
  3. Sesame oil has natural sun block and sunscreen properties. Application of sesame oil on the body parts exposed to the sun can help prevent tanning and other damages caused by the harmful UV rays of the sun.
  4.  Sesame oil seeps into the skin or is absorbed by the skin very easily, which helps skin feel soft, hydrated and light.
  5. Sesame oil has the ability to attract and trap toxins that are soluble in oil. This detoxification of the skin can be done by applying warm sesame oil to the skin, let it stay for around 15 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water without using any soap.
  6. Topical application of sesame oil is also known to be beneficial in the treatment and cure of skin related disorders like psoriasis and eczema.
  7. Sesame oil is also very beneficial in the cure and prevention of acne due to its oil pulling properties.

 The best part is this oil is very affordable, with a small 100 ml bottle costing anywhere between Rs. 35 to Rs. 65 depending on brand and method of extraction.
I generally need only a half a spoon of this, for the entire face and neck, before using it I warm it up for a few seconds.
Do you use nut oils or essential oil blends as a part of your beauty regime?

Edit (8th September 2010): A lot of readers wanted to know about the brand I am using. It is a local brand called Idhayam. I got a 200ml bottle for Rs. 35/- at Hypercity. You can check out the site of this brand here: http://www.idhayam.com/

  11. @Uzma: Thks :)
    I just got some very local brand of sesame oil from Hypercity. It is a brand that is called something starting with 'I" and cost me 35 bucks for a 200 ml bottle. It is food grade edible oil.

    @Poohkie: I have tried both coconut and almond too. I quite like coconut, looking for an organic version these days. Almond too is nice, but I find it heavy on my skin :)

    @Anamika: Yea, you are the only other beauty blogger who loves oils as much as me. I think they are a boon and need to be a part of skin care routine, if you want healthy, nourished skin.

    @Aarthi: I am looking for an organic version of this oil, but haven't found it yet. Making do with a local brand.

    @Shoppingaholic: Yea, I too like coconut oil, I love its smell :)

    @IMW: Thks :)

    @Sonia: Isn't it! I was shocked how easily it melted everything off!

    @Neeraj: Hey! Thks a lot for the comment :)

    I know, the oil has a very peculiar nutty smell, not everyone will like it. Thks for pointing out the Clinique products. I will check out their moisturizer as I find sesame to be suiting my skin very well :)

    @Gawjua: Thks! I hope u like it :)

    @ST: I did use J&J baby oil, but it didn't suit me. Brand, hmmm, I just use a local on-descript brand :P

  12. Hi Tanveer:

    Being from east Sesame oil is very much loved amd part of EVERYTHING edible and used extensively for beauty aids.

    The brand that i found convincing to use for beauty treatments is the one from Fab India. It stings but is the closest to being organic(thats wht i believe being fab india fan.hehe)
