I am new to Makeup - Help! Part II

First of all, a big thanks to all the readers who contributed in yesterday's post with their own personal recommendations on makeup & skin care. I am sure Anon must have found it very helpful to hear from you fellow oily skinned gals.

Moving on to your makeup query.

Primers:
Anon, as you mentioned yourself, that you have very oily skin & will be sitting in front of a holy fire for hours. If you want your makeup (or what ever little you decide to wear) stay on, you need a primer. A primer is generally a silicon based product that forms a film between your skin & the makeup you apply. This barrier prevents the makeup from absorbing into the pores & skin and also it keeps facial oils away from the makeup by absorbing them. It helps your makeup go on smoother and last longer.

Maybelline does have some primers - White Stay UV Base (you can read a review here), that are cost effective. I cannot comment on their efficacy as I have not used them.

If you can do invest in a MAC primer, it will be expensive but it is the foundation of your look and will make your makeup last longer.

Foundation: Try Revlon Colorstay liquid foundation for oily/combo skin. I have heard very good reviews for it. If can afford get MAC or else Revlon should be good. Do make it a point to go shopping barefaced, and try this on your skin, go & see what it looks like in the sunlight & wear it for a good 3-4 hours before you purchase. Some foundations tend to oxidise (turn darker) with time on oily skin, a 3-4 trial will give you ample time to test it.

Max Factor & L'oreal too have some nice foundations, that you could try.

Concealer: When purchasing this too, go barefaced and try this directly on your dark circles to see the coverage. You could also ask the SA (especially if you are at MAC) to show you how to apply this since this will be the first time you will use it. Try & get the best concealer you can afford, because it is this one product that will help your skin look its best without looking made up. L'oreal has some good concealers. This will be one of those areas where quality matters a lot.

Loose Powder: Since you have oily skin, you will need loose powder to set your foundation & concealer. Try Maybelline White Stay UV base or Lakme Rose powder. Use a large fluffy brush to just gently dust all over the face.

Eyeshadow: Maybelline Chai Latte quad is a pretty reasonable eyeshadow collection with shades of brown that will match most skin tones. Use a primer on your lids before using this to really bring out the color. These are simple colors that you should be able to carry

Kajal: Weddings are teary affairs and unfortunately kajal cannot withstand this. It will be running down your face in no time. For your upper lash line go in for a liquid black liner from Lakme. Practice a few times to get the hang of it, it is very easy. A still cheaper option is Elle 18. For the lower lash line and waterline, you can opt for Colorbar's I Glide Pencil in Blackout. Once you have applied this, set it with a black eyeshadow powder (use a thin eyeliner brush & apply a thin layer over the liner)

Mascara: Maybelline Define a Lash (waterproof) should help your lashes look good, without an overly made up look. ELF Wet Lash Gloss is good for setting your eyebrows.

Blush: For blush, Maybelline has this really nice peachy blush - it is in dream mouse format that will look good on your skintone. The texture makes it very good for oily skin & it is also incredibly easy to blend so you will have a natural look. You could even try Colorbar Peachy keen.

Lips: To deal with pigmented lips, when applying liquid foundation, lightly apply a layer over the lips the lips as well to tone down their pigmentation. As you have yellow toned wheatish skin and want a simple subtle look you could try Maybelline ColorSensational (these have long lasting power and are also very moisturising) for shades like crazy for coffee, yummy plummy. If possible get a maybelline colorsensational lipgloss similar to the lipstick, you can wear the gloss over the lipstick for added effect and staying power, or else during the night time events. If you can afford to, try Revlon Colorburst as well for shades like Plum (which you can apply with a light hand), Blush, Peach and Hazelnut.

Makeup Removal: make sure to remove makeup throughly to avoid clogging pores. You can use something as simple as coconut oil too. Massage well into face for 10 minutes, wipe off with damp cloth & then wash your face with a facewash to remove all excess oil. You can even get Garnier Cleansing Milk to remove makeup.

Do practice a little bit with all products, just to get a hang of them. It will help build your confidence when using them on the D-Day.

I hope these tips have helped you. All the best!

  1. Hey,

Revlon colorstay actually gives a bit of a white cast so I wouldn't recommend that. Nor would I recommend maybelline's primer as that is zero in oil control. Maybelline's dream matte powder is your best bet. :)

  2. I don't know if you mentioned this in your other post, but do get some pics clicked to see how the makeup shows up with flash! I was wearing concealer under my eyes the other day and had to get my picture taken for some work... the concealer looked terrible!
