It isn't Milia, but Molluscum contagiosum :(

Sounds ewww, right? You remember my post a few weeks ago, when my GP diagnosed my boils as milia. Turns out they aren’t milia but Molluscum contagiosum – a viral skin infection.
I kept trying herbal home remedies to get rid of “milia”. But they persisted & in fact got worse – they were inflamed, red, spreading & had gotten bigger. I finally caved in and visited a dermatologist.
He told me that the delay on my part plus the home remedies I was trying had made my condition worse (the bumps spread) & caused a secondary bacterial infection which was the reason for the aggressive inflammation on my face. I am currently on antibiotics to clear up the bacteria, post which I shall be going in for treatment for the viral infection.  The antibiotic cream he has prescribed for me, is very sticky & makes my skin itch, it has cleared up the redness & the boils are now much smaller.
But this episode has taught me the following:
1.       If it is a boil & it doesn’t look like acne, go to a derm asap
2.       Don’t touch the face too much; I most probably picked it up by touching something contaminated & then touching my face.
3.       Herbal remedies work when you know what you are dealing with.
The other sad thing is that I may have to throw away some of my makeup / skin care. Especially things like compacts & creams sold in jars, as there is a probability that it too may have got infected. There is no way to tell what is safe, so I might have to just dispose of things I was using in the last 2-3 months. The rest of the stuff (brushes, et al) will have to be disinfected with spirit.

  5. That's too bad.But you're right about consulting the dermatologist, not when things get out of hand but at the first signs of anything wrong.I've learnt that the hard way too.
    Wishing you a speedy recovery.

  7. That's awful! But I'm sure your skin will recover soon. I too learnt the hard way that you need to be careful about herbal remedies. Sometimes they make things worse; for me it made my hair loss problem worse a few years ago. Don't worry too much about throwing away stuff. Better to throw it away than risk another bout of infection. And like GGG said, you can use it as an excuse to shop more.

  9. Oh Dear, I really wish you a speedy recovery, keep up with the medication and hopefully it should clear up soon & yes plz do discard your liners/ lipsticks/blush/eyeshadows especially cream based products (i know the thought of discarding favorite makeup must haves is heartbreaking)but Viral & Bacterial infections have a nasty habit of resurfacing so its best to prevent any type of re-infection through makeup. Take care & get well soon :)

  10. I tried to comment earlier but couldnt. Have been following your blog, and I just wanted to chip in about molluscum contagiousum. My son had it when he was a baby. Initially it was a boil and we didnt think much of it, then it grew really big and the other eruptions occurred, all over his tummy. The dermatologist told us that if the largest were cauterised, the infection would subside. We did and nothing happened. (have to state that because he was a baby, the doc didnt dare to use too much of whatever she used to cauterise him). Then she prescribed tretinoin, but even that wasnt helpful. Finally we turned to homeo (I was sceptical) and it worked. The eruptions subsided naturally. It took about 3 months, but it worked. And since molluscum is contagious, my daughter and I both got it, and we took the same course of medicines. Of course this was about 6-7 years ago, and Im sure dermatalogists now have better weapons, but I just want you to know that if nothing else works, do consider homeo
