Reader Query: Simple Makeup for College

I am an 20 year old college going girl. At times, during presentations, we're supposed to do a bit of make up and I don't really have an idea as to what will look best since the only things I use is a moisturizer, lib balm and kohl pencil for the inner rim.

I have a fair skin tone and my face is a lil chubby so don't really know what would look best on me since I don't wanna look overdone. I like to keep the look natural so please tell me what would be suitable for me.

Also, I have very oily skin and also have frequent breakouts. Do you think a blood purifier really helps in clearing out the zits and making the skin healthy?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank You,

Joanna.M

Dear Joanna,

Thank you for your query.

Since you are new to makeup, and not sure how makeup will play out on your features, you could start small. You currently use a moisturiser, lip balm & kohl pencil. Below are some simple ways to upgrade your look.

1. Add a drop or two of liquid foundation to the moisturiser and then apply. This will help even out your skin, but not look overdone as the coverage will be very light.

2. You can use a tinted lip balm instead of a clear balm to add some color to your lips. You could also opt for non-shimmery but tinted glosses. Revlon's Cherries in the Glow is a nice pink without shimmer. It is very moisturising so you won't miss the balm but it will also add some subtle shine and color. Or else you could just buy a lip pencil in a light neutral color close to your original color. Dab a bit on the lips and then top off with lip balm/clear gloss.

3. You are currently using a kohl to do your waterline. You could add waterproof mascara in brown or black (use only on top lashes) to emphasise your eyes and make you look more awake without looking too made up. Or else you could also line your upper lashes as well with a nice shimmery brown or black. Opt for long lasting, smudge proof pencils.

I personally think that you can stop right here. This look will be natural and fresh. Since you are young, your skin will have a natural, rosy glow by itself. Just take good care by using the right cleanser and moisturiser, exfoliate regularly. Eat healthy food and try and fit in some physical activity like dancing or a game everyday.

4.  If you need eyeshadow, try getting a cream eyeshadow that is long lasting and water proof. Get it in a neutral grey, taupe or deep brown shade, and apply only all over the lid. Once set, these eyeshadows don't budge. You could try Inglot, MAC or MUFE for these products.

5. For blush: Since you have oily skin, you can opt for a simple peach pink powder blush. Use a nice fluffy brush to apply and remember to buff well to avoid sharp lines and to keep it looking natural. You can even use a nice watermelon red or pink lipstick to double up as cream blush. Just apply a dab on your fingers and blend it in well on your cheeks so that it looks natural and like the glow is from within. Alternatively you could just exercise daily and eat healthy for a natural rosy, healthy glow.

6. While some might suggest contouring techniques of makeup to make your face appear less chubby, and more well defined, these are special techniques that require lots of time and practice. You could learn them from a makeup artist to help you define your face / cheek bones, but do understand that contouring is technique that can look extremly madeup/fake in real life if not done properly. Invest time & practice before stepping out of the house with such a look.

As for blood purifiers like Safi, I can't say. Both my parents swear by it (they both had acne as teens) and say it really helped them clear their acne. It did nothing for me, not that I was very regular with it. I hated the taste.

I don't know how these work, they claim to purify the blood. But as a microbiologist I don't understand how toxins in your blood could block the pores on the surface of your skin. Doesn't make sense to me. From what I understand, acne is end result when pores get blocked by dead cells, excess sebum that hardens and bacteria that get trapped in this pore. For any acne medication, please refer to a dermatologist to ascertain real cause and proper medication. These blood purifiers per se don't seem harmful, so you could try them out. Do go through the ingredient list to ensure you are not allergic to any additives.

I hope this helps you!

Any more makeup tips for Joanna?

  1. very very informative reply for college going girls...you have given great answer. In my opinion, natural beauty is the most beautiful makeup for a college going girl. You are absolutely right that physical activities and simple skin care are the great way to look beautiful.

  2. Hey :)

I suggest trying a cream blush (max factor or inglot), clear mascara (avon or body shop), black pencil eyeliner on the upper lashline and a sheer lipstick or tinted lip balm - very simple and easy. I've suggested a cream blush as it looks less obvious or made up.

If you want to add warmth to your skin during summer, a matte bronzer used as a blush with a light hand will do it for you.

I was a college girl myself till a few months so I know that sweaty, oily skin can be a big problem esp if you use public transport. So please avoid powder products, they will sweat off unevenly. For eg, try not to use powder blush or powder eyeshadow! Carry a pressed powder on the days when there is a competition, presentation etc. to touch up your look. I recommend maybelline dream matte powder!

    Hope this helps :)

Sorry Tanveer for my gigantic comments on all these posts! Guess I love giving faltoo advice :P btw, i'll be in bombay nect week, meeting rashmi and hetavi (HD), let me know if you wanna join in :)

  6. I will try to suggest inexpensive products are college students may not have a lot of money to spend on makeup.
    1) You can try nivea starshine lipgloss. They feel like a balm, are tined and very glossy. 3 in 1!
    2) For eyes, I recommend what Tanveer said - kajal with water proof mascara. lotus kajal is supposed to be smudge-proof, while maybelline makes nice waterproof mascaras.
3)I personally wouldn't prefer cream blushes as they feel sticky on my skin. But you can try maybelline dream mousse blushes. They are light, mousse textured and feel completely dry. Also they are super easy to blend. Even a makeup novice should be able to do it easily. If you want powder blushes, try colorbar, maybelline or lotus herbals. Choose blushes that don't have shimmer.
    4) Carry a compact with you. Lakme & Maybelline make inexpensive ones.
I personally avoid foundation so can't comment on that. Maybe you can try ponds tinted moisturizer instead.

I too have oily, acne prone skin. I say go ahead with the blood purifier only if you are confident about it. I suggest going to a dermatologist for the acne. Wish I had done that when I was younger :(

  8. Thank You for the help!
I really appreciate the answer since it covers up everything I need.
I agree with you. the first three steps are actually easy enough and I guess will give me that fresh look I want.
As far as contouring is concerned, I don't think I need that and also I guess it will need a steady hand and a lot of practice.

@reader comments: thank you everyone. I will keep all the things in mind

  9. Wow these tips actually helped me a bit as well. I don't really wear much makeup but I've always wanted to start wearing a little more for special events and whatnot.

I never thought of using a lip pencil and gloss...interesting.

PS. Thanks for your sweet comment on Anju's guest post! :)

  10. Okay, sorry to bother you,
    but I have another question!
Does Lacto Calamine really help?? I've read we can use it instead of a foundation. Is that true??

  11. Well medical supplements do help a lotttt as far as I know but I always used only herbal ones. Safi was good but I couldn t really take the stench and the taste. I am now having triphala powder (powdered amla, bibitaki, haritaki) and my stomach is so much better even though i never thought i had any problem ... my skin is lession free :) It is all natural and the tablet form doesn t work for me. It is said to solve many ailments and is also a general tonic. My eyesight is also more clear ... it s like switching from a plain TV to a hitech plasma LCD !
I ve used lacto calamine as a foundation and it is way better than anyother expensive foundations that i ve tried ! Good luck !
