Make Up for Acne Prone Skin

There are some basic do’s & don’ts when choosing make up for acne prone skin:

Choose oil-free cosmetics that are labeled “non-comedogenic” (won’t clog pores)
  • Apply makeup after applying acne medication. Wait for 10 minutes to let the medication sink – in
  • Some acne treatments make the skin more sun-sensitive, so try to use products with SPF
  • If you have trouble finding makeup that can be used with acne medication, consult a dermatologist
  • Always clean all traces of make-up before sleeping
  • Always be alert to signs of dryness. Some Acne medications are very strong and can dry out skin completely. So you are left with large pores and dry skin.
Foundation: Pick oil – free foundations that are non-comodogenic.
If your skin is oily try

  1. Maybelline Dream Mousse Foundation (oil free foundation, perfect for oily skins as it tends to absorb oil)
If your skin is drying out due to the medication try

  1. Lacto Calamine lotion (this will not only absorb the excess oil, it will also moisturize and give a sheer wash of foundation to the skin.)
Concealer: essential to hide that acne. Choose a stick/cream concealer as it is easier to blend and it provides better coverage.
Try

  1. Oliva stick foundation that also doubles up as a concealer (Rs. 60/-)
Translucent Powder: Use this to set the concealor and foundation, if needed.
Try

  1. Maybelline White Stay UV Compact (Read review here)
Blush: while powder blushes are generally recommended for oily skin because of their staying power and ability to absorb oil, I would like to differ and recommend gel blushes. Powder may plug the pores to give rise to more pimples

Try

  1. The Body Shop Cheek & Lip Tint (Read review here)
  2. Lakme Just Kissed Cheek and Lip Gel (Read review here)

If you would still like to use powder
Try

  1. Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush – which is non-comodogenic (read review here)
Eyeshadows, eyeliners, mascara, lip colors generally don’t cause acne so you can use whatever you like in these products.

Please note that I have referred only those products that either I have personally used. There may be certain really good products that I may have missed out on because I have not used them. If so, please feel free to add to the list.

  2. HI Tanveer,

ALthough I don't have an oily skin but I would surely pass these tips to my friends who have an acne prone skin. Very useful post!

Divija, you can try scrubbing a tomato piece on your face. DO that in circular motion. It really helps in reducing pores.

  11. I gen hav a prob with eye shadows...I always notice dat d cream based ones don't stay 4 long(as expected) bt on my oily skin even powder is put within 4 hrs...maybe dis is the normal duration of shadows...
Also the stupid liner pencils also run and thus can't apply a dark color-grand exception is colorbar define eye pencil..sticks lik glue..loved ur review of it!
